About the Metropolitan Libraries Section

The Metropolitan Libraries Section aims to be a platform for public libraries of cities with 400,000 or more inhabitants, although libraries serving wide and diverse geographical areas with the same or more population may be included, and exceptions may be made e.g. for capital cities or major conurbations with a smaller population.

The Metropolitan Libraries Section, formerly the International Association of Metropolitan City Libraries (INTAMEL), dates its origins to 1966, the year Prague City Library organised an international conference to celebrate its 75th anniversary and invited city libraries from other countries to attend. The meeting proved to be a beneficial networking opportunity to share information and to promote the development and advancement of libraries. The foundation meeting of INTAMEL is reported in Toronto in 1967. In 1976 it became an IFLA Round Table of the Division of libraries serving the general public, and a Section in 2004.

Since 1968 INTAMEL has held an annual Conference hosted by a different library system from around the world.
