Bangladesh: Second information literacy workshop

The ALP small project on health information literacy in Bangladesh continues with the second phase of the project, a workshop for researchers, faculty and health students. The workshop was held February 12-13 2012 and included participants from several institutions across the country.

Project organiser Dilara Moni reported on the workshop:
East West University Library organized a two-day “Workshop on Health Information Literacy” on 12 and 13 February at the university auditorium. This is the second phase of the IFLA sponsored Workshop on Health Information Literacy, which was specially designed for researchers, faculty members, health workers and graduate and undergraduate students from different universities of the country.

Professor Ahmed Shafee, Vice Chancellor, East West University was present as the chief guest on the inaugural session of this workshop. In his speech, Professor Shafee mentioned that people need more knowledge about hygiene measures to keep in good health. He emphasized that libraries have a pivotal role in promoting health information literacy. Libraries not only issue books/other library materials but also locate and provide the actual needed information to its users. Mr. Kazi Ali Reza, Office in charge, United Nations Information Center was the special guest in this program.

The lead resource person for the workshop was Dr. Jagtar Singh, Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala (India). He gave a brief introduction and background of the workshop, underlining the significance of this workshop to the participants. He further said that the objectives of the workshop were to create awareness about health information literacy among the workshop participants to promote good health. He reiterated the need to follow a holistic approach to health and wellness by creating a balance of mind, body and soul concerns.

The closing ceremony of the workshop was held on 13 February in which Professor Dr. Muniruddin Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor of East West University was present as the chief guest. In his speech, he urged the participants to use their learned knowledge to create a healthy society. It is very essential to be health conscious, because health is the root of our happiness in life.

In her concluding remark, Ms. Dilara Begum, librarian of EWU, said that workshops like this would contribute greatly to develop a good and healthy nation. At the end of the program, she proposed a vote of thanks to all the resources persons and participants as well as the workshop organizing committee for making the whole session a successful event.
