The first workshop in Botswana as part of the Building Strong Library Associations programme was held in Gaborone from May 4-6 2011, following the Stakeholder Summit held in November 2010.

The goals of the workshop were:

  1. Visibility: To raise the visibility of the association amongst its key stakeholders
  2. Governance: To work toward a more engaged and active BLA executive committee

Invited participants for the meeting were the entire BLA Executive Committee (11 persons), one representative from each of association’s two branches in Ghanzi and Maun, and representatives from:

  • Botswana School Library Association (BOSLA)
  • Botswana Library Consortium
  • Library Students Association (LIMSA)
  • Botswana National Library Service (BNLS)

The Workshop

The Workshop took place at the excellent meeting facilities of Botec. The BSLA training material formed the basis of the first two days of the workshop, customised for the needs of Botswana Library Association. Content from the Building Your Library Association, Sustaining Your Library Association, and Strategic Relationships and Partnerships modules was delivered. All three days were characterized by a very high level of interaction with lively debate.

Outcome of the Workshop

The main outcome of the workshop is an action plan developed by all participants. The Action Plan is divided into a Short Term, a Medium term, and a Long term Action Plan. The two first plans are broken down into practical operational plans. The main principles of the action planning were that the plans should be realistic and all action should be done within existing resources.

In October, the Short Term Action Plan will be finalised and The Medium Term Plan will be well on its way.
