Lithuania: Lithuanian Librarians’ Association towards more strategic partnerships

The Lithuanian Librarians‘ Association second workshop in the Building Strong Library Associations programme was held May 19-20, 2011 in Klaipeda, Lithuania. The group of 15 people representing national, regional and municipal public libraries as well as academic and school libraries worked together with national trainer Claudia Lux on the topics of developing strategic relationships and partnerships as well as fundraising issues.

The workshop began with sharing experiences how participants have used knowledge and skills gained in the first workshop. Participants noted that they used it in developing library strategic plans and working with their staff, managed to attract new members to the association and shared training materials with their colleagues.

During the workshop, participants thought trough current and potential partners of the Association and identified essential elements of communication with them. The group discussed the importance of good relations and actions that can be taken to manage difficult relationships. Additionally, participants learned to build marketing strategies and to establish and maintain new partnerships. Another important topic was fundraising which is essential aspect of Association’s work and success. The group discussed the importance of having a clear plan, staying strategic and targeted, measuring the process as well as outcomes. Participants were introduced with different tools to evaluate and plan for better partnerships as well as with examples and case studies.

In the next and already final workshop it is planned to address issues of effective advocacy for library association. The workshop should be held in the fall of 2011 in Birstonas.
